Emergency Wire Rope Repair

Problem: Customer called stating that the wire rope on the auger winch had become very twisted and required replacement. Upon further inspection Tri-State overhead crane technicians found that the wire rope had become tangled in the auger (auger arm weighing 40,000 pounds).

Solution: After working into the night, we were able to remove the tangled rope from the auger by cutting it into small enough pieces. We then attached the new rope to the old via a Kellum grip. Hand pulling the new rope (7/8 inch diameter 650 feet long) became the only option to pull it through the reeving. The new rope was then secured to the winch drum and auger arm (dead end). Winch body itself was thoroughly inspected for damage and wear. System was test ran and calibrated for upper and lower travel limits. All work was completed in a two day period.

End Result: The customer was extremely happy with the repair and the dedicated team willing to work all hours to get them back up and running.
